Experience A Tour Of Guilford In A Totally New Way

IMG_0600The great thing about this whole internet  website thingy is that I get the opportunity to meet new people,  and experience new things.  Shortly, as in within an hour,  of the website going live,  Shoreline Segway contacted me about taking a tour of Guiford aboard a Segway.  Now I can make all sorts of jokes about segway in a journalistic manner ( not that I am one by training. Ask my editors about that) or I can just describe it as briefly as possible.  Two wheels,  platform with electric motor to stand on,  and handle bars.  That’s it.  Well, not really.  Inside this platform,  is an incredibly complex motor and drive unit that helps balance you and moves in any direction, based on the direction that you put pressure in.  Not lean,  not turn,  I mean exert pressure.  Unbelievably sensitive.  And unbelievably easy and fun to ride.

So,  last week I conned my partner in oh so many crimes,  Julie,  to take the tour with me.  See Julie had taken the day off, and was going to have her last official beach day of this all to rainy summer,  and since the timing was perfect,  she jumped at the idea. We both live downtown,  and see these things all the time,  so why not.  Of course I was a little worried,  because, and Julie will be the first to admit it,  is not an athlete.  I am worried she is going to lean the wrong way, and we are going to have to do some Julie roping to stop her from going over a cliff.  Not the case.  Not only did we pick it up very quickly,  but we are racing around the parking a lot faster than we probably should have. Within 5 minutes of us taking the safety and instruction course.  As in it’s that easy,  and that much fun.

Now I suppose that I can go into detail about the tour of Guilford,  and going through scenic downtown,  and learning about the history, and then cruising to the harbor. About the beautiful scenes of Long Island Sound, and the history of Faulknor’s Island, but I won’t. I will tell you, though, of how amazing this piece of equipment is.  How by the time you take your first turn of the tour on to Broad Street,  it feels like you have been riding the Segway forever.  And by the time you hit Lovers Lane,  you have the chance to really “open it up”.  No snails pace,  you get to ride.  Maybe we were only doing 15 miles an hour, max, but standing up with nothing around you,  well it’s impressive.  So take the opportunity to get out and get to Shoreline Segway. They also do tours of Hammonassett State Park, and Mystic, but there are restrictions, so make sure you ask about this.

By the way,  they are actually in the same building as Costume and Characters. Everything you need for Halloween, and gag gifts to boot.  Obviuosly, an unabashed cross promotion on my part, but with good reason.  For the next few weeks, bring your no longer needed children’s  costoumes, and donate it to them.  They will then bring it to some charitable organizations in New Haven,  so that families in need can get their kids costumes for Halloween.  Real simple folks,  go have fun with Shoreline Segway, and drop off your old costumes to help those who need the help, and find your costume for this year.  Put a smile on your face, and to that of a child who desperately needs a reason to smile. f you imention this story, they then will give you 10% off your Shoreline Segway adventure.
