Celebrating The Life

maryjonesNow, I don’t want this to sound maudlin, but I was thinking over the Thanksgiving weekend of significant aspects of the holiday season, now that it’s upon us in full force.
And, not wanting to lose sight of what is most important, I’m suggesting …even throwing out a challenge to you…to make a conscious point of remembering your family members who have passed away over the next few weeks.
And, not in a sad way…though, of course there will be an element of that…but in a nostalgic way of reminding yourself of happy memories with that person. Whether it’s a spouse, parent, grandparent, friend…take a few moments to think of happy holiday memories.
This is the first holiday season since my mother died, so of course, it’s a significant one for me in that regard. And, yes, I have plenty of sad moments in terms of missing the chance to see and visit with her. But, I am making a point of remembering the wonderfully happy holiday traditions that she created…her Christmas molasses cookies, stringing paper stars on our hearth the week before Christmas and pulling one down each night with my sister before going to bed , the spotlight on our front door that illuminated my bedroom during the holiday season, and…on and on.
Remember that this season is much more than buying gifts and attending parties…make sure it’s about memories… making new ones and remembering old ones. And, the people who created them and were a part of them.
I hope those memories put a smile on your face. They do for me.
