Hygienic Art XXXI – Salon des Indépendants

Posted by Edwin Bartlett On January - 29 - 2010

On January 30, 2010 the Hygienic Art will kick off its 31 annual no-holds-barred Art Exhibition st and Multi-Media Music and Performing Arts Festival in downtown New London Connecticut. The two week (three weekend) festival features mostly free events – lots of hot new art; rock, cabaret and folk music; theater and fashion shows. All events are within a stone’s throw of each other among New London’s galleries, cafes, music venues and restaurants.

The main event is the Hygienic’s “Salon des Indépendants” — an Art Exhibition modeled after the Paris “Salon des Indépendants,” the artists’ rebellion in 1884 against the rigid art establishment’s dictated forms and styles. The rebels launched a movement, and their very first show exhibited works by Cézanne, Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec, Vincent van Gogh and Georges Seurat. Later “indépendants” included Chagall, Braques, Matisse, Edvard Munch, Modigliani and Miró.

If you’re an art lover, come discover tomorrow’s van Goghs, Cézannes and Gauguins.

If you’re an artist, enter your latest or favorite work in the Hygienic Art Exhibition. New London’s outsider art event is open to all artists. The Hygienic’s notorious policy of No Judge, No Jury, No Fees, No Censorship guarantees every artist one submission and assures all forms of expression have a chance to be presented to the public without restriction. Sign in and hang your own work in the Gallery (79-83 Bank Street) on Saturday, January 30 from 8am until 6pm. The Exhibition opens to the public at 8pm that night and runs through Saturday February 13. (Art pick-up is Sunday, February 14 beginning at Noon).

The Exhibition is well known for its diverse original art ranging from the sublime to the outrageous. Over its 31-year life, the annual art extravaganza has grown from an anti-establishment visual art show to an anti-establishment multi-media art event including film, performance art, a young artists’ show and musical events. The organization that supports the show has also expanded over the years, saving the historic Hygienic Restaurant building where the show was first held and developing the property into an artist cooperative and galleries and opening an outdoor stage and Art Park.
