Well it’s getting close to the big night and I’ve got a lot to discuss to provide you with all the reviews. This week I will cover what I consider to be two of the best films of the year.
“The Hurt Locker”, which has nine nominations, is a strong and intense film that is going to take home a few statues this year. Kathryn Bigelo, who previously directed “Strange Days” and “Break Point”, could conceivably upset ex-hubby James Cameron for the Oscar. Mark Boal wrote the original screenplay and may possibly edge out my personal fav Tarantino. Jeremy Renner (best actor nom) has had more of a TV career than a movie career up to this point, but I think that will turn around moving forward. I enjoyed him in a show I watched last year called “The Unusuals” and he was in “The Assassination of Jesse James”. Renner’s gritty performance in “The Hurt Locker” was one of the best in the category this year, but I still don’t think he will win. If you haven’t seen it yet, it is out on DVD and you won’t be disappointed. It could follow suit with the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) and bring home the top prize.
Next, let’s move on to the cinematic gem “Avatar”. James Cameron’s production company, Lightstorm Entertainment, has developed a new process that combines live action 3D and computer-generated, photo-real visual effects. The result of his vision is unparalleled. YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST SEE IT IN 3D. It is unlike anything you’ve seen before and I now wish I had seen it at an IMAX theatre. If you can ignore the political undertones, the story is solid and entertaining. The whole world of Pandora is simply amazing. The characters were well played by Sam Worthington (Sully), Stephen Lang (Col. Quaritch) and Sigourney Weaver (Dr. Augustine). I never get tired of seeing Zoë Saldana (Neytiri) on the screen…even blue. In my opinion it was the best watch of the year and though I don’t think it will sweep the nine nominated categories, it should take many. You can still catch it in a couple of select 3D theatres. Don’t miss out on what I call “CINAMAGIC”.
I would like to say a little something about the best actor in a leading role category. I don’t know many people who saw Colin Firth in “A Single Man”, but I thought he was excellent and I wouldn’t mind seeing him win. I’m also a big fan of Jeff Bridges’ work; “The Fisher King” and “The Big Lebowski” to name just a couple. His role in “Crazy Heart” reminds me of Mickey Rourke in “The Wrestler” in that the performance is better than the movie. “Crazy Heart” was not nearly good enough for a best picture nomination but I think Bridges will win. I think it’s his time.
Well that’s it for this week. I’ll wrap up the pre-Oscar stuff next week and attach my prediction sheet. As always I welcome and appreciate your feedback. I remain, John
