In the early mornings when my Afghan hound and I take our walk I try to take advantage of the quiet of Anchor Beach in Woodmont before going to work. While he sniffs and trots around out here by the lagoon; I breathe in the salt air and clear my head before engaging in the day.
Above me are the sea birds, flying and diving for their breakfast. I am watching the water, the mist and the lobster boats going by, my dog, blissfully, is in his own world. I hear the birds chippering; the Grackles, Mourning Doves, the Robins and the Monk Parrots in the trees.
Suddenly a pair of gulls flies over my head, swooping, playing and effortlessly coasting on a breeze. As they chatter back and forth, one of them suddenly starts laughing. A laughing gull. I am wondering if this particular bird found the conversation funny. I then, too, started to laugh. I only wish I had gotten the joke.
