Three “OG” Mom’s Hitting The Shoreline “OUT AND ABOUT”

Posted by Kendra Farn On February - 11 - 2010

So it all started with our husbands and a Christmas gift. Noah, Stephan, and Mike giving Kendra, Sue, and Giulia a “Girlfriend Getaway”. (They get credit for the creative gift, but not the name. That’s actually what The Saybrook Point Inn and Spa calls the package).

We left Friday right after lunch to avoid seeing our kids again after school and having our hearts ripped out before we hit the highway. We beat Friday traffic and within one hour we were at our first stop…the outlets. Clinton Crossing was great. We all scored. I mean it, compared to Greenwich prices they were giving the stuff away.

Who could resist?

Next thing we knew, it was dark. The outlets were closing and we were hungry. We checked into the Inn, and immediately ordered shrimp and brie to the room. They lit the fireplace in our room upon delivery, and we relaxed with the Pinot Grigio that was waiting there for us as part of “The Getaway“. (Clearly they nailed the key ingredient needed for 3 moms to truly be “off duty”).  The rooms are beautiful and comfy at the Saybrook Point Inn..right down to the pillows.

We ate dinner downstairs in the Terra Mar Restaurant that was nice, but obviously is more appreciated when there are actually boats docked and the water is not covered in ice blocks. While I’m convinced I could have slept like a log in the middle of I-95 that night, my night was a dream and Giulia and I almost took it into the double digits on the clock but don’t tell our husbands. Sue on the other hand, rallied for the 9am Yoga class which she says was very worth it.

Saturday morning breakfast at the Inn was beyond delicious. It started with the fresh berrries. Then the french toast which was on baguettes and the bacon I think they said was apple smoked and so good I downed like 5 pieces which I would have said filled my 2010 quota except that Giulia and I repeated the EXACT same breakfast Sunday morning. (So much for watching the figures..and I don’t mean the cost.)

Off to the Spa and my long overdue facial. I’m not sure what island I floated off to during that 50 minutes, but when I returned I very much appreciated that there were no products pushed my way. We hung out in the hot tub, lounged around, and yup, headed out again.

First for a drive around Fenwick to drool over the waterfront homes and search for the sign that reads something like “Please Park Prettily” that we were told was still in the yard of Katherine Hepburn’s old home. We didn’t find it so we headed off of course for round 2 of shopping at the Tanger Outlets in Westbrook. Again, we hit it hard, making sure to get presents for the kiddies and Valentines for the guys who had sent us there.

Saturday night, we went to dinner at Aspen. The food was awesome. Salmon, Steak Frites, and Sirloin. The salads were just as good. Next, we hopped over to  “The Kate” to hear Chris Barron, the lead singer from the The Spin Doctors. He was good, his voice very unique if you know it.  The Kate is beautiful, they’ve done such a great job with this arts center which is why I was so disappointed to see less than a full  audience that night. I mean for god sakes, our tickets were $20, which is about what I paid for two jog bras at Nike. It probably doesn’t help when they’re not serving wine and beer. Some people (like me) just better enjoy live music with a cocktail. Still, I wish more shoreline people would support The Kate or they’ll find themselves like the people of lower Fairfield County who now have to drive by the lines of wanna be guests on the street for the Jerry Springer Show that is sadly what is helping to keep the lights on at The Rich Forum in Stamford.

We did take a picture with Chris Barron afterwards and I was happy to learn that “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong” was not in fact written about me as my husband is convinced, but rather Barron’s Step Mother.
Sunday after stuffing ourselves with another waterside breakfast, we hit the spa for massages. Mine was painful, but you know the saying and I had some serious knots that needed to be worked out of my back during this “Girlfriends Getaway” for it to be 100% successful and for me to be recharged, renewed, mommy.

And I was. I can speak for my friends Giulia and Sue too.  Yes, we our hubbies could have sent their three wives to NYC for an overnight or weekend. But when you live where we do in Connecticut…been there done that. Our “out and about” weekend on the Shoreline was just what the doctor ordered. I for one, will be back. Only an hour away and we felt like we were in quaint Cape Cod. It was however a good thing that we pulled back into town JUST IN TIME for the hubbies to do the long awaited “hand off” ………and sit down together for the Superbowl.
