Description
The existing VFW Building is known as three chicken coops duct taped together. The rental of the existing building serves as the primary source of revenue to pay utility bills, and fund in and out of town community projects involving veterans and others in need.

Three years ago, the two boilers providing heat to the building were on their last legs. VFW Hall Commander Larry Santamaria asked for the assistance of Stephen Spurrell of Neighborhood Builders, Inc (NBI) of Guilford. Further inspection uncovered many leaks, lots of rotting wood, and NO building insulation. The repairs that were absolutely required were overwhelming and not worth the investment in a structure that has so many other problems. From this meeting came the idea to knock the building down and replace it At No Cost To The Veterans! Local architects, a structural engineer, and land surveyor have already donated their services. NBI will complete all of the plan development and construction management, at no cost. A plan is in place along with Town approvals from Planning & Zoning, Zoning Board of Appeals, and Wetlands to build a post and beam style structure, including state of the art equipment, on substantially the same footprint.
A great time was had at last years function (See http://www.rockthevets.com ) Bigger and better things are coming for 2010! If you want to watch our progress, join this group. From http://www.guilfordvfw.com Many of you already know that we are working on building a new building. What we aren’t sure everyone knows is why it is such an important project. Veteran’s organizations over the years have given our veterans a stronger voice when they needed it most. When a war or conflict is on the front page of every newspaper and on the news every night, we are all thinking about it on a daily basis. After it is over and the men and women who fought that war come home, there is less focus on their needs. Veteran’s organizations are who goes to the aid of the soldiers who may not get the benefits that they are entitled to. They lobby for the passing of bills that ensure that our veterans are properly cared for after they are home and going back to their own lives. It is more difficult than it may seem to come home and go back to life as it was. The V.F.W. is there to help make sure the newly returning soldiers know that others understand and can help. All over the country veterans organizations are unable to keep their buildings due to the overwhelming expense of maintaining them. We are fortunate to have been able to sustain our building, but its state of disrepair is making it difficult. We ask for your donations for a building, but more importantly for our cause. The hope is that we will be able to help keep the V.F.W. strong nationally and locally so that every service man or woman is treated with the care and respect that their service to their country has earned them. Thank-you for any help you are able to give.
